Jon Favreau will not direct Iron Man 3 ?

The poet Robert Browning once wrote that "a man in armor is his armor's slave." By that logic, director Jon Favreau is now a free man: Insiders tell Vulture that Favreau has just informed Marvel Studios that he won't direct a third Iron Man film.

It's unclear whether the impasse was financial or creative or both. One informed source hears that he was frustrated with Marvel's urge to stuff more of their in-house heroes into the next film in the wake of The Avengers. In a recent interview with MTV News, Favreau explained that based on his conversations with Marvel Studios executives, he had no clarity as to what a third Iron Man film would even be about. “In theory, Iron Man 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor, Hulk, Captain America and Avengers,” said Favreau at the time, “This whole world … I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.”

Still other industry insiders look at Favreau's growing price tag and speculate that he was getting too expensive for the frugal Marvel and its equally cost-conscious parent company, Disney. In fact, one Hollywood player familiar with Marvel's playbook theorizes that the company had been pushing a confusing and packed vision of the third film as a tactic to provoke Favreau into leaving the project. Favreau, after all, is said to have received $10 million for the Iron Man sequel; it's unclear what he'd be seeking for a third film, but reps familiar with these sorts of gross participation deals tell Vulture that he likely would command $12 million to $15 million up front, plus a 15 percent percent of the gross after the film recouped. With star Robert Downey Jr. also participating in the gross (and so far it's a $1.2 billion global franchise), that's an enormous amount of cash headed out the door. Disney has got to be protective of their profits for an IM3: It bought Marvel for $4 billion in 2009, and then this October paid Paramount Pictures $115 million for the distribution rights to The Avengers and Iron Man 3 in order to reunite the titles with their parent company.

Regardless of why, we’re told that Marvel quietly began the process of finding a director to replace Favreau last night. But Marvel’s task is complicated by the fact that Downey Jr. has both contractually negotiated director approval and is currently the hottest leading man in Hollywood with first pick of dozens of "go" movies around town.

Favreau will be staying on the Disney lot, at least for now: His next project will be the studio's Magic Kingdom, about a family trapped in Disneyland and their magical encounters with all sorts of Disney attractions and rides. Marvel currently has no script for a third Iron Man, and while it has no plans to shoot the film until 2012 at the earliest, Marvel execs hope to put a director on the project to guide its development as soon as possible.

Rumor: Black Cat as Spider-Man 4 Villain and a New Female Lead?

Source: Firstshowing
by Ethan Anderton

We're going to pump the brakes after that headline because there's a lot of rumor manure to sift through. Earlier today Mania reported a big rumor that Black Cat would be the new villain in Spider-Man 4, and that Rachel McAdams (of The Notebook and Wedding Crashers fame) was the frontrunner for the role. However, this seemed to be just another in a long line of ridiculous villain rumors, but then our friends at SlashFilm found a post in The Observer regarding actress/columnist Romola Garai, who revealed she had an audition for a role in Spider-Man 4. But is she auditioning for Black Cat or asupposed new female lead?

Let's answer that second question first before we dig into this villain debacle. SlashFilm's apparent certainty on Sam Raimi looking for "a new female lead" is quite misleading and because of this misrepresentation, highly inaccurate. A new female lead fully implies that the story would put Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane on the back-burner in favor of a new leading lady, but this is simply not the case. Dunst is still very much involved with the production and our sources say is being paid her full price for the project, so I doubt this new female role is that of a female lead, but rather a strong supporting role akin to Bryce Dallas Howard's work in Spider-Man 3 as Gwen Stacy. Now that we've cleared that up, onto the real story.

First let's just keep everyone on the ground and say that this should all be taken with a grain of salt. There seems to be a decent chance that Black Cat could be the villain if not at least one of the villains but at this point it's almost impossible to know. After Sam Raimi's talk about getting back to basics, it seemed like the two villain formula would be abandoned, but maybe he just wants to do it right this time. In fact, Black Cat's story (which includes a struggle with her unethical thieving ways and later a romance with Spider-Man) fits well with Raimi's Spider-Man formula, which always finds the villains troubling not only the costumed hero, but also becoming entangled in Peter Parker's personal life as well.

Black Cat's incarnation begins with her secret identity Felicia Hardy who was inspired to follow in her imprisoned father's footsteps as a cat burglar. But her new life was thrown into upheaval when she was date-raped by her boyfriend, Ryan. She turned her grief and shame into rage, channeling her feelings for revenge towards intensifying her training regime in martial arts and acrobatics. But when Ryan was killed by a drunk driver, depriving her of the satisfaction of revenge, Felicia set out stealing from others to compensate psychologically for what was stolen from her. It was her thievery and attempt to break her father out of prison that ultimately brought her into Spider-Man's life where she would find love and reform from her criminal lifestyle.

As I said, there's no way we can know this for certain just yet. There's still just as much of a chance that the other recent rumor of Dr. Kurt Connors finally stepping into the villainous role of The Lizard could happen as well. Anything could happen at this point! All I know is that what I'm hearing (but cannot divulge) are huge details along the lines of something from Mania's source that got buried in their story, and that's "[Sam Raimi and Co.] are

[also] casting for a male villain, but had few details." I'd keep my eyes peeled for that bit before obsessing about this Black Cat business.

And really, this story from Romola Garai probably has nothing to do with Black Cat, because if Rachel McAdams was really a frontrunner, that means they've got quite the list of actresses for this character and I seriously doubt they are still putting lesser known actresses "on tape" for it. Unless it is known there is a wide search for a role to be filled, roles like this usually don't have auditions especially with names like Rachel McAdams being thrown around. And narratively I just don't know if this is the right approach because not only is a lone female villain a hard sell (remember Catwoman had The Penguin with her in Batman Returns), but she just feels a little too similar to Black Widow from the upcomingIron Man 2.

Taylor Kitsch is Really Excited About More Potential Gambit

Source: firstshowing
by Alex Billington

So do we! Canadian actor Taylor Kitsch, who played Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, is ecstatic about his character's potential return. Rotten Tomatoes caught up with Kitsch at Cannes, where he was previously unaware that a sequel had even been greenlit. "I hadn't heard that was going to happen! You have my brain going now about what I'd love to do with Gambit!" And that's just the start of his enthusiasm, as Kitsch really goes off. "I'm just excited to go deeper into Gambit. It's a flattering thing when people say that the only shitty part about the character is we didn't see enough of him. If that's the case, bring it on."

Unfortunately, Kitsch didn't confirm whether or not he'd officially be back as Gambit in the Japan-set Wolverine 2 - but we're hoping for the best. Gambit has been a fan favorite to see brought to the big screen since the X-Men series first kicked off in 2000. The "Ragin' Cajun", as he's also known, was seen briefly in the movie, at least in a scene where Logan travels to New Orleans to ask him about the "island." We got a glimpse at some of his powers - he has the ability to manipulate kinetic energy - meaning he can hurl playing cards with an immense amount of force. And he loves to use that bo staff, which we also saw.

"He has so many more colours to explore. I want to go dark with that cat. There are so many things I want people to see of him and he really is his own deal… If I can have some moments where you go deeper into Gambit's back-story and why he was the way he was at that poker table — that's a fun thing to explore." Kitsch is already making comic book fans foam at their mouth with that statement. Sadly, Fox hasn't made any plans for a Gambit spin-off, yet, though it could happen sometime in the future. Or so we really hope. From the brief glimpse of Gambit that we got in Wolverine, I'm all for seeing more of Remy LeBeau.

Kevin Feige's Quick Update on Upcoming Marvel Projects

Source: firstshowing
by Alex Billington

Now that we've kicked off the summer movie season, let's check in with Marvel's president of production Kevin Feige. Well, we don't really have his phone number (that would be awesome), but Empire did get in touch with him, and did get him to give an update on at least two important upcoming Marvel projects - Thor and The Avengers. A few weeks ago, Kenneth Branagh finally confirmed that they'll be shooting Thor starting next January. Feige confirms the same and adds that they're working on some "spectacular animatics already for our first action scene" as well as "a rewrite of the draft" to have ready fairly soon.

But most importantly, what about casting. We've heard plenty about the production, but all we want to know is who they've cast. "We will probably be having cast announcements in the next month or so on Thor," Feige says. "We're looking to cast Loki and Odin soon, and the main female role. And we'll also hopefully have lockdown shortly, gearing towards the beginning of production, which will be early next year. So I think there will be a lot of announcements between now and then." Good! And don't forget that in March, we rumored that Natalie Portman was in, although last I heard, the position of Thor was still open.

And last but not least, what's the latest on The Avengers - the only movie in Hollywood that's actually slated for 2012? "Zak Penn is already on board The Avengers [as writer] and he’s spending a lot of his time looking into what we're doing with Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, seeing how we're tying it all together. And he's beginning to outline the script now – he'll be doing that over the summer." Unlike some other Marvel projects (e.g. Wolverine), they definitely aren't rushing this, and are giving plenty of time to Zak so that he can get a feel for the other three movies that will tie in. Thanks for the update, Kevin.

First Official Photo from Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2!

Source: firstshowing
by Alex Billington

Exactly as Jon Favreau promised on twitter, the first official photo from Iron Man 2 has been unveiled tonight over at USA Today. Although I wasn't expecting to see much, this is actually an awesome first photo, giving us a big hint that Tony Stark may be building a "Hall of Armor" of Iron Man suits, just like in the comics. But of course, we won't know more details about that or even know how many different suits he has until we get to see Iron Man 2 next summer. "It's never easy with summer movies, but we're trying to keep as much a surprise as possible," Favreau says. Without further ado, check out the first official photo!

Iron Man 2 takes place "six months after Stark revealed his identity as Iron Man" at the end of the first movie. Favreau explains that the story this time will indeed involve a little bit of that public relations crisis. "How many superheroes are open about their true identities?" Favreau asks. "We wanted to play with that idea. But it obviously has consequences — in his relationships, on the team. There are a lot of areas we can explore." As for the villain(s) or how much we'll get to see of S.H.I.E.L.D., Favreau won't be talking about that. But it's good to keep everything so mysterious, right? I know it definitely makes me more excited!

Rumor: Sam Raimi Wants Morbius for a Spider-Man 4 Villain

by Alex Billington

It looks like the Hollywood vampire craze has hit Sam Raimi, too. Apparently the most recent issue of Empire (via SlashFilm) includes a quote from Raimi where he says: "I like it in the Marvel comics when Spider-Man fights Morbius. He's really cool. A vampire! I like that combination of superhero plus supernatural." While this is obviously not confirmation that Morbius will be in Spider-Man 4, it's our first hint at a villain we might see in the upcoming sequel. I'm sure most people would claim that the excess of villains was what hurt Spider-Man 3 the most. So is using Morbius next time an improvement?

In the comics, Morbius is a living man who is given vampiric abilities via scientific means. He first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #101 in 1971. As we all know, The Lizard is another villain that fans are hoping to one day see, which would make Morbius a bit more of a possibility. Both characters "use the same technology but have different animals involved in their research… one having blended with a lizard the other a vampire bat." The next question is whether Morbius and The Lizard alone would be good enough villains for one movie. I guess I just can't see two "animals" being the villains for a big movie like this.

Now that we pretty much know who the villains will be in Iron Man 2, it's time to turn our attention to Spider-Man. What villains do you want to see? Can both Morbius and The Lizard be equal enemies?

Kenneth Branagh Finally Talks About Directing Marvel's Thor

December 13, 2008
Source:
MTV
by Alex Billington

I'm going to make a confession. Back when the news first hit that Kenneth Branagh was going to direct Marvel's Thor, I pessimistically wrote that "Branagh seems like the worst choice to direct a comic book movie since Joel Schumacher." Now that I've seen Valkyrie, however, my opinion has changed. Watching Branagh act in that film has made me change my opinion about him. Maybe it was just the lingering sour taste of Sleuth that made me so opposed to Branagh, but for whatever reason, watching him in Valkyrie made me slightly more confident. Since the news first broke in September, Branagh has been keeping quiet about the project, but MTV finally got him to break down and talk about directing "The Mighty Thor."

No, the title hasn't changed, as Branagh clarifies, "I think it will be Thor." So why did he want to direct a high profile comic book movie? "To work on a story about one of the immortals, Gods, extraordinary beings, inter-dimensional creatures," he told MTV. "There's science fiction and science fact and fantasy all woven into one. It's based on Norse legends which Marvel sort of raided in a brilliant way." And for those, like me, who are skeptical about the scale of the project and Branagh being able to handle it, he emphasizes that, "it's a chance to tell a big story on a big scale. It's a human story right in the center of a big epic scenario." Sounds like he at least understands the monumental task that he is taking on.

As for who will play Norse God of Thunder, aka Thor, Branagh wouldn't even hint as to who it might be, but he did give us this tease: "There's been lots of talk [about casting]… but we are too early at this stage. We're getting the story and the visual effects together and all of that is very exciting. Someone sensational is going to play the part but it is early days." Either he's really good at keeping things under wraps or they really haven't chosen anyone yet. Considering Marvel has Thor set to hit theaters on July 16th, 2010, Branagh better get to work quickly on finalizing these sort of details, as they're probably planning to shoot early next year. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to see another great Marvel movie!

Sam Raimi Chats Spider-Man 4 and Lizard Possibility

October 16, 2008
Source: MTV
by Alex Billington

It's almost pointless to talk with Sam Raimi about Spider-Man 4 or 5 right now, because the movies are so far out that there's not much he can say. However, I do always enjoy hearing whatever Raimi has to say just because he's such a big geek and is still one of my favorite filmmakers. MTV caught up with him recently and spent some time talking about the future of Spider-Man, covering as much ground as they could, including eventually a particular villain that I know everyone wants to see. And although there isn't a script yet, it's very exciting to hear him talking about Spider-Man 4 for the very first time.

"I'm really excited about Spider-Man, and I'm hoping to direct it," Raimi said, contrary to confirmations that he was officially signed on. "I don't have a script yet, but production would start probably by March of 2010, I'm guessing. It sounds like a long time away, but we need a script first, and a lot of pre-production has to take place." And as for those rumors that they'll shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 back-to-back, he confirms that its been mentioned. "That had been talked about… It's Amy Pascal's decision. I don't think it has been decided yet, and she's the one that's really going to make that decision; I'm really curious myself."

Let's get on to some of the juicy details. Raimi doesn't have much to hint at, because there aren't finished scripts, but he did mention a few interesting things. Obviously the stories in both films would be very closely linked, but even he doesn't fully know what it they'd be about. "It just hasn't been written yet," he reiterates. And what about villains? Will we ever see Dr. Connor turn into Lizard? "He's a great actor, and I think one day The Lizard's story will be told," Raimi confirms. "I don't know if it will be this one or not. I just don't know. I'm definitely hoping to work with Dylan in the picture. I just don't know who the villain is yet."

Raimi also chats about the possibility working with Kirsten Dunst again, as well as James Franco, Willem Dafoe, and Cliff Robertson, who played Ben Parker. As I said at the start, he doesn't have much to say besides some hopes regarding the story and actors, but it's still our first word from the guy who built the modern cinematic Spider-Man from the ground up. At this point I'm getting more excited thinking about the return of Spidey than dreading it. I remember those days, before Spider-Man 3 had ever hit theaters, when I was more excited to hear from Raimi about Spider-Man than I was to hear from Nolan about Batman. Hopefully we'll get back to that level of excitement again soon enough.

Don Cheadle Replacing Terrence Howard as Rhodey in Iron Man 2!

October 14, 2008
by Alex Billington

Very interesting bit of news today! Terrence Howard, who played Col. James Rhodes in Iron Man earlier this summer, has decided not to reprise the role for the sequel. Don Cheadle will step in to replace him in the upcoming Iron Man 2 which is currently in pre-production. Apparently Howard decided not to return due to "financial differences, among other reasons." Marvel then decided to take the role in another direction and approached Don Cheadle. Might that other direction eventually be a War Machine spin-off? Rhodes is expected to play a larger part in the sequel, which is rumored to "go beyond high-tech villains." Huh? There are some rather intriguing statements being made about Iron Man 2 tonight.

This sounds similar to what happened with Rachel Dawes' replacement in The Dark Knight. Except Cheadle doesn't seem like as smooth as a transition, especially when I was a huge fan of Howard and couldn't wait to see his version of War Machine. Interesting observation, however, is that Howard has never actually had a major leading role in any film (give or take maybe Pride?). But Cheadle on the other hand definitely has, although I don't think that necessarily makes him any more qualified. This might just mean they're leaning towards the idea of the War Machine spin-off down the line. Either way, I'm not that excited for this change, especially because I really loved Terrence Howard as Rhodes in Iron Man.

Fans will certainly remember that scene near the end when Rhodes looks at the Mark II armor in Tony Stark's lab and mutters "next time." Interestingly, Howard made a revealing statement back in May regarding War Machine: "The question is whether we will take the time to put on the Iron Man suit first and then have to fight with Iron Man to take it off me and then ultimately build a new suit for Rhodey or whether they go right into the second one of them building the suit. I would prefer to wait for the third one. I'd prefer to let it grow a little bit and then after the third one, they could go into its own franchise of War Machine later on. I don't want to introduce War Machine too early for my own monetary benefits."

All I can say right now is that I'm very weary of this switch. What do you think of this? Will Don Cheadle be able to fill Terrence Howard's shoes and eventually lead a War Machine spin-off ?

The First Avenger: Captain America Full Synopsis Revealed

October 5, 2008
Source: Film School Rejects
by Alex Billington

We already confirmed back in May after Marvel's announcement of The First Avenger: Captain America that the film would be set in WWII. But an actual plot synopsis beyond that hasn't ever been released. In the latest issue of Production Weekly, a new full plot synopsis for the project was published. I'm a bit hesitant to trust this magazine, since they seem to have a lot of information on a project that's very far out, but for now this is what we'll go with. It does seem accurate and it does seem like a great way to introduce us to Captain America before progressing into The Avengers movie just months later.

"Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy's earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the 'Super-Soldier Serum' and bombarded by 'vita-rays.' Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and leader of the Avengers."

Reading that actually makes me wonder whether they just took the standard synopsis from some sort of Marvel database and used that until the studio puts out something officially. Either way, I'm glad that they're sticking with the original Captain America story and going all the way back to WWII. That should make for the perfect introduction just months before we move into the Avengers story. No director or actors have been officially announced yet. The First Avenger: Captain America will hit theaters on May 6th, 2011 with its follow-up, The Avengers hitting theaters on July 15th, 2011. Will you be ready by 2011?

Favreau Mans Up

Director already working on sequel.
by Todd Gilchrist

August 21, 2008 - On Tuesday, August 19, 2008, the Los Angeles Times reported that Jon Favreau is already hard at work on Iron Man 2, the sequel to this summer's first comic book blockbuster. Speaking to Times blogger Geoff Boucher, Favreau said "we're working on it now, which hasn't been officially announced. It will be released in 2010.

"The film's 2010 release date was previously announced by Marvel Studios, who intends to include the sequel in their forthcoming slate of films. But even though the time crunch will challenge Favreau to finish the film on time and budget – a goal he has met with every previous film he shot – the limitation may mean an unexpected opportunity for sites like IGN, and ultimately, the fans themselves: Favreau will likely be shooting a lot of the film in California. Currently Favreau is partnering with California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to set up tax breaks and incentives for filmmakers who elect to shoot in the state, and that may mean that Iron Man 2 will make its home there as well – which might make it easier for journalists to attend set visits and see shooting as the production gets in full swing.

Stay tuned to IGN for more news and updates from this and all of your favorite movie, TV and gaming properties!

Marvel Studios Update

News on Spidey 4, Iron Man 2 and more.
by Jim Vejvoda

August 8, 2008 - Some morsels of movie news were peppered throughout Marvel Entertainment's Q2 earnings conference call held earlier this week. Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel chatted about the studio's upcoming film slate which includes Iron Man 2, Thor, The Avengers and The First Avenger: Captain America and those of its partners, such as Sony's Spider-Man 4.

During the conference call a full transcript of which is available here Maisel was asked about whether Spider-Man 4, which Sony is eyeing for a May 2011 release, might conflict with Marvel's planned May 6, 2011 release date for Captain America.

Maisel replied that "we always have a lot of options now that we control green light and our destiny with these films. Obviously we can't respond to hypotheticals and what we would do with various either competitive moves or partner moves, like Sony with Spider-Man. So at this point, I'd just have to say once a move like that happens, we'll obviously let our response be made publicly but it wouldn't be constructive to respond to a hypothetical."

In other words, time will tell who will blink first in any potential game of release date chicken between Marvel and Sony.

Marvel Entertainment Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Kenneth West disclosed that "during this quarter, we did receive the $5 million advance [from Sony] associated with Spider-Man 4. That keeps Sony in line with actually releasing this picture within the normal time period."

Maisel was also asked whether Paramount Pictures was set to distribute all of Marvel's forthcoming productions or if the distributors could be split, as they were between Iron Man (Paramount) and The Incredible Hulk (Universal). "The only film that is a certainty at this point for the Paramount distribution is Iron Man 2," Maisel said.

Since Marvel Studios has a relationship with every other major studio save for Warner Bros. (home of DC Comics movies), that opens the door for Sony, Universal, 20th Century Fox or Lionsgate to possibly release one or all of the other three upcoming films on Marvel's slate (Captain America, The Avengers, and Thor).

The Magneto Spin-Off is On - David Goyer Directing !

April 26, 2007
Source: Variety
by Alex Billington

It's confirmed, a Magneto spin-off (in addition to the Wolverine spin-off already talked about) is under development, and they've already got a director - David Goyer! The only catch is that it won't be our favorite white wizard Ian McKellen playing Magneto, but that's only because the story isn't going to be set around the current X-Men films' timeframe, instead it will be set around his young years and his origin. The script has already been written by Sheldon Turner (The Longest Yard, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) and Fox will start up production after Wolverine.

The director, David Goyer, has previously directed Blade: Trinity and The Invisible which opens in theaters tomorrow. Although Blade: Trinity was terrible, I'm interested to see The Invisible and I suggest if you want a taste of what his style is and how it might play into Magneto, I suggest you go catch The Invisible this weekend as well.

The film will be an origin story that was mentioned in the first X-Men film regarding Magneto coming to grips with his mutant ability to manipulate metal objects as he and his parents try to survive in Auschwitz; the first scene in the first X-Men film featured this when he was a young kid. Continuing on, Magneto meets Professor Xavier when Xavier is a soldier liberating the concentration camp. After that, Magneto begins to hone his powers by hunting down and killing Nazi war criminals that tortured him, and his lust for vengeance turns Xavier and Magneto into enemies. Both characters in the spin-off will be played by actors in their 20s.

Disregarding Goyer's Blade: Trinity, the story for this sounds pretty damn exciting and I'm very interested now. Despite it won't be McKellen, who in my mind was the perfect Magneto, I'm confident they'll find someone comparable. I leave you with one more Magneto image from the Ultimate comics universe.
