Tom Hanks on Toy Story 3 and What They Showed Him First

One of the many reasons that I love Pixar as much as I do is because of their work ethic, their process, how they do things. It's a bit different from everyone else, but it still works, and it's somewhat mesmerizing to see (as in, the special features on their DVDs). Empire published an excerpt from their recent interview with Tom Hanks talking about working on Toy Story 3. He explains that they actually showed him the movie first, with temporary voices, before he then recorded his own voice. "I have been in and done three big complete recording sessions and will probably have at least one more to do, possibly in about eight months."

"They did an interesting thing on this one. They did not send us a script. They showed us a complete story reel of the entire movie, with storyboards moving from one to the next, and the people up at Pixar recorded some voices with some music and sound effects. Tim Allen and John Ratzenberger and I went in a movie theatre, watched the reel and said, 'This is great, let's get to work!'"

I don't think I need to remind anyone that Hanks voices Woody in the movie. And of course, Tim Allen is back as Buzz, and the aforementioned John Ratzenberger is back as Hamm the Piggy Bank. A few weeks ago, Disney showed a promo reel for Toy Story 3 to audiences at NAB. And before that, we announced that the first Toy Story 3 trailer would be attached to the Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3-D showing on October 2nd later this year. It's always fascinating to hear those stories behind how Pixar works, and this is definitely no exception. I mean, how often does anyone see the movie first before they start work on it?

Rumor: Bethesda's Fallout 3 Headed to the Big Screen?

April 20, 2009
Source: Joystiq
by Alex Billington

I'm sure that in about 50 years, every video game ever made will be made into a movie. Obviously it has to do with the idea of having a pre-established fanbase surrounding the property, however, some of the stories in video games just aren't fit for the big screen. Fallout does not necessarily fall into the category. Considering the success of the latest game in the series, Fallout 3, I would've imagined that it would already been picked up and in development, but as far as I know, this is the first time I've heard anything about it. Joystiq is reporting that publisher Bethesda Softworks has filed a trademark for theatrical rights.

Joystiq's report is very speculative and the fact that Bethesda is filing for a trademark is only an extremely early indication that it may one day be possible that we'll see a Fallout 3 movie. For those unfamiliar with the game, Fallout 3 is set in the year 2277, 200 years after the nuclear war that devastated the world in an alternate post-WWII timeline. The game puts the player in the role of an inhabitant of Vault 101, a survival shelter designed to protect humans from the nuclear fallout. When the player's father disappears under mysterious circumstances, the player is forced to escape and journey into the ruins of Washington DC.

There's nothing wrong with that story, and I'd probably go see it if they made a movie, but I've got a feeling that Fallout 3 is one of those games that just won't make for a good movie (think Resident Evil). As in, it's great to play on the Xbox 360, but it's not great to see adapted, or at least in the way I'm sure Hollywood will adapt it. It's sad that this is the difference between two of the most popular entertainment mediums, but alas, that's just the reality for video game movies until something breaks that mold (and right now I'm hoping that's either Prince of Persia or BioShock or both). Only time will tell what happens to this game.

Is Steven Spielberg's Lincoln Project Still Next After Tintin?

by Alex Billington

Everyone knows that in Hollywood, nothing is officially "in production" until the cameras start rolling. So despite the report in May that Steven Spielberg would move on to shoot his Lincoln movie after finishing Tintin, we're still skeptical about whether or not that might actually happen. The only updates Spielberg gave to press yesterday, after receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes, were that the project is still "coming together really quickly." I guess that means it's still on track. Although its star, Liam Neeson, told ComingSoon today that he hasn't seen or a script and doesn't know the plans yet.

Neeson has been attached to play our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, for a few years now. "He asked me four years ago would I play this part and I most certainly said I would. He'll do it whenever he's ready to do it, but it's in the works," Neeson said. "I don't know (anything) other than what you know." In reality, we really don't know much about this project or even what the story will really be about. Of course it's a cinematic retelling of the life of Abraham Lincoln, who died in 1865, but at what age will it focus on him and will it lead right up to his assassination or otherwise - those are all questions that still remain unanswered.

Given this update on Lincoln doesn't provide much for us to mull over, I'm going to take this opportunity to mention how depressing it is that Spielberg's two upcoming projects are films that I don't really care about. Normally when Spielberg gets attached to something, it becomes the next big thing that we follow all the way to its release. But for whatever reason, both Tintin and Lincoln have no buzz at all. I think the lack of interest in Tintin comes from our disconnect with the material; and I think the lack of interest in Lincoln comes from not really wanting to see a period piece from Spielberg anymore. What do you think?

The winners of the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards, the precursor to the Oscars, were announced tonight at an extravagant ceremony held at The Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills. Thankfully the results this year weren't as big of an upset as last year, with Slumdog Millionaire taking the top prize as Best Drama as well as winning awards for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score as well.
